Since September 2007, I’ve been documenting graffiti in the public study areas of the University of Chicago’s Regenstein Libray. This expanded to include the whiteboards in the all-night study space, the study carrels, and even the bathrooms. When my office moved to Crerar Library, I started taking photos of their blackboards and whiteboards as well. Now I photograph library graffiti at every university I happen to visit. I have particularly large collections from Brown University and Arizona State University.
The project name, Crescat Graffiti, Vita Excolatur, is a play on the University of Chicago’s motto, poetically translated “may graffiti grow from more to more and so be human life enriched.”
